Fourteen centuries of history, a UNESCO Old Town, two of Croatia’s finest wine regions on either side, and a Mediterranean rhythm that pulls you back long after you leave.
Dubrovnik is one of the most captivating destinations in Europe and a city that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who visits. Located on the southern coast of Croatia, along the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea, Dubrovnik combines a rich historical heritage, stunning natural beauty, exceptional gastronomy, and a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle. Whether you are interested in culture, history, food, wine, or simply breathtaking scenery, Dubrovnik offers an unforgettable experience.
With more than fourteen centuries of history, Dubrovnik is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the Mediterranean. The city flourished as the independent Republic of Ragusa, a maritime power renowned for diplomacy, trade, and cultural achievements. Today, visitors can still admire the remarkable legacy of this period while exploring the city’s historic center.
The Old Town of Dubrovnik is a true architectural masterpiece and one of the most valuable cultural treasures in Croatia. Surrounded by impressive stone walls built between the 12th and 17th centuries, the Old Town features elegant palaces, monasteries, churches, fountains, and historic buildings constructed in Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. Walking through the narrow limestone streets feels like stepping back in time. Because of its exceptional historical and cultural significance, Dubrovnik’s Old Town is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Dubrovnik is not only a city of history but also a vibrant cultural destination. Since 1950, it has hosted the world-famous Dubrovnik Summer Festival, one of the most important cultural events in Croatia. Every year, from July 10 to August 25, the city becomes an open-air stage where visitors can enjoy theatre performances, concerts, dance productions, and exhibitions held in some of Dubrovnik’s most beautiful historic locations.
The city’s spectacular scenery has also attracted international filmmakers. Dubrovnik gained worldwide recognition as a filming location for the popular television series Game of Thrones, where it served as the setting for King’s Landing. The city has also appeared in productions such as Star Wars and Robin Hood. Fans from around the world visit Dubrovnik to discover the famous filming locations and experience the atmosphere of these iconic productions.
Food lovers will find plenty to enjoy in Dubrovnik. The local cuisine reflects centuries of Mediterranean tradition and emphasizes fresh, seasonal ingredients. Restaurants serve a variety of seafood specialties, including fish, mussels, and oysters harvested from nearby waters. Traditional dishes featuring lamb, veal, and locally grown vegetables are equally popular. Every October, the city celebrates its culinary heritage during the Good Food Festival, attracting visitors eager to explore local flavors.
The gastronomic experience is perfectly complemented by excellent wines. Dubrovnik is ideally situated between two renowned wine-producing regions: the Pelješac Peninsula and Konavle. Pelješac is famous for powerful red wines made from the indigenous Plavac Mali grape, while Konavle offers elegant white varieties and authentic family-run wineries. Both regions are also known for producing high-quality olive oil and offer excellent opportunities for memorable day trips.
Another reason visitors fall in love with Dubrovnik is its natural beauty. The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate with long, sunny summers and mild winters, making it an attractive destination throughout the year. Visitors can spend their days exploring historic landmarks, relaxing on beautiful beaches, swimming in crystal-clear waters, or taking boat trips to nearby islands.
Combining history, culture, gastronomy, wine, and spectacular coastal scenery, Dubrovnik truly offers something for everyone. It remains one of Croatia’s most iconic destinations and continues to inspire travelers from around the world. For good reason, Dubrovnik proudly carries its famous nickname, the Pearl of the Adriatic.
Dubrovnik carried this nickname long before tourism arrived. It follows the city’s reputation as the Republic of Ragusa, a maritime power famed for diplomacy and trade. Today it describes what you see on arrival: fourteen centuries of history preserved inside a UNESCO-listed Old Town, framed by the Adriatic Sea. The city still wears the title proudly.
Walls built between the 12th and 17th centuries still enclose a living city of palaces, monasteries, churches and fountains in Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque style. Having survived earthquakes and centuries of trade remarkably intact, the Old Town was inscribed by UNESCO in 1979. Our old town walking guide takes you through it street by street.
Dubrovnik has long, sunny summers and mild winters, so it works as a year-round destination. July and August are the warmest and busiest — the Summer Festival turns the Old Town into an open-air stage from July 10 to August 25. May, June, September and October bring warm sea and thinner crowds, with the Good Food Festival arriving in October.
Two stand out. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival has run since 1950, filling squares and palaces with theatre, concerts and dance every July and August. In October, the Good Food Festival celebrates local cuisine with markets, tastings and menus built around the region’s Mediterranean classics.
Both make easy half-day or full-day trips. Konavle — elegant whites and family-run wineries — sits under an hour southeast of the city, while Pelješac, home of the Plavac Mali reds, is about an hour away via Ston. We run private wine tours to both regions.
Not for the historic centre, which is best explored on foot. For airport arrivals, hotel pickups or days beyond the walls, our transfers and hourly private driver service cover the coast. Most visitors only need a car for independent trips outside the city.
